How DHL is changing delivery

The parcel service expects up to eleven million shipments between the end of November and Christmas. For comparison: on normal days there are an average of 5.2 million. Tobias Meyer, a board member of Post and Parcel at Deutsche Post DHL, provided insight into how his company is reacting to this in an interview with newspapers from the media group Funke.

It is already evident that packages travel longer than usual. According to our observations, the cause is usually in the starter package center or on the path between package centers. But Meyer wants to start from another point above all: he wants to optimize delivery. “The novelty is that this year we are receiving more and more small parcels delivered by mail carriers to cope with the quantities,” Meyer said. This is particularly relevant in large cities. In rural areas, however, there is a so-called composite address, where a courier delivers letters and parcels.

But Meyer is planning another modification. “We [werden] it also works with more waves during the day, so our delivery staff will ring more often in the evening over the next few weeks, “says Meyer.

DHL hired 4,000 new colleagues in the early summer and a further 3,000 were added in October. “By the end of the year, we will have 10,000 more employees on board for delivery and sorting,” said the package manager. A total of 110,000 couriers are arriving in Germany.

The group currently does not foresee price increases for private customers. However, Meyer would appreciate if the prices for heavy packages could be raised. They caused physical strain on the employees. The Federal Network Agency received a price hike in the spring. However, prices for corporate customers will rise in early 2021.

By the way: To make sure your Christmas package reaches your family and friends on time, you should deliver it by December 19th at the latest.
