Hero’s nurse dies of cancer at age 46 after months of coronavirus crisis

A popular nurse described as “the most caring and loving person you could ever meet” has died aged just 46.

Nicola Powell, who worked as a chief nurse at Royal Gwent Hospital in Newport for 15 years, was diagnosed with cancer after falling ill during the coronavirus crisis.

Her devastated family said she was “so busy taking care of everyone else that she forgot to take care of herself.”

After her death on Monday, her mother’s distraught family said she will be remembered as someone who “would go above and beyond for anyone,” reports Wales Online.

In a joint statement, they said, “Both patients and colleagues loved her for her caring and kind nature.

“He always went out of his way and had genuine empathy for those he cared for.

“When Covid-19 arrived, she didn’t hesitate to take extra shifts without thinking about herself.

“Her cheerful disposition and bubbly personality have made her popular with everyone she has come into contact with.”

Nicola, affectionately known as Nikki to many, has been a Welsh NHS nurse for more than 20 years and has made her career up to become a principal nurse. During his career he has made many friends, including many of his former patients.

“She had people coming to her on the street and thanking her for taking care of them in the hospital as much as she did to make sure they were as comfortable as possible,” the family added.

“She was loved by everyone around her and no person had a bad word to say about her.”

The family added that they were “overjoyed” to become Isla-Rose Powell’s grandmother in February 2019.

“On Halloween night, Isla-Rose went to see Nikki in the hospital. Nikki knew this might be the last time she would see her niece. As soon as they saw each other, their faces lit up. They didn’t leave. gone each other.

“Despite everything she’s been through in the past few weeks, she was still only concerned about the rest of her family.”

In the weeks leading up to his death, Nicola complained of incredible fatigue and pain in his arms and back. After she passed out she was taken to the Royal Gwent where several tests were carried out. However, it wasn’t until after his death that doctors discovered he had a rare form of cancer.

“She was so busy taking care of everyone else that she forgot to take care of herself,” the family added.

Nicola was said to be an avid DIY enthusiast, loved to shop and “could never resist a sale”.

“But above all she was truly an extraordinary nurse and her absence will be deeply felt by all of us”.
