After closing its Ontario processing plant in 2014, Heinz will soon return to producing ketchup in Canada.
On Tuesday, US food conglomerate Kraft Heinz Co. announced in a press release that, starting next summer, it will produce 45 million kilograms of ketchup annually at a facility in Montreal.
The ketchup will be destined for consumption in Canada and will create approximately 30 jobs at the Mont Royal plant in Montreal.
The company said the plan will involve a $ 17 million investment, part of which is funded by a repayable $ 2 million loan from the Quebec government’s business expansion program.
Heinz ketchup sold in Canada used to be produced at a processing plant in Leamington, Ontario, but the company sold the factory in 2014. This resulted in a consumer boycott of the iconic product and created an unexpected boom for French rivals. .
