Health Canada’s chief medical consultant says Pfizer’s COVID-19 vaccine candidate could be approved in Canada next month.
Supriya Sharma says Health Canada’s review is the most advanced for the vaccine developed by Pfizer and BioNTech.
He says Canada is reviewing it alongside the US and Europe and expects it to be approved here at the same time he receives US emergency clearance.
The US Food and Drug Administration will meet on December 10 to consider whether to give the green light to Pfizer.
Canada has a purchase agreement to purchase at least 20 million doses of Pfizer’s vaccine, with the first four million of those scheduled to arrive by the end of March.
Sharma says he expects the first shipments of the Pfizer vaccine in January, but Canada may start receiving the first doses before the end of the year.
