Hanbit Unit 3 resumes power generation after 2 years and 6 months

Unit 3 of the Hanbit Nuclear Power Plant (1 million kW class), which had been closed for two years and six months due to a containment vacuum (hole) problem, resumed power generation on the 14th.

According to Korea Hydro & Nuclear Power’s Hanbit Nuclear Power headquarters, Hanbit No. 3 completed the seventeenth scheduled preventive maintenance and started power generation at 5:00 pm that day. Hanbit Nuclear Power HQ plans to ramp up production of the Hanbit 3 Unit and reach release on the 17th.

Hanvit Unit 3 has been continuously postponed due to maintenance and maintenance as a vacuum was found in the containment building during scheduled preventive maintenance in May 2018. A total of 120 voids have been discovered so far.

KHNP was ready for operation after the completion of maintenance and maintenance, but the operation was delayed due to opposition from local residents and environmental groups concerned about stability.

After completing the final inspection, KHNP recently agreed to manage the Nuclear Safety Committee, the Ministry of Trade, Industry and Energy and other related organizations on the premise of implementing seven measures with Yeonggwang-gun, Yeonggwang-gun Council and Hanbit Nuclear Power People’s Countermeasure Committee.

The agreement included ▲ an apology from KHNP ▲ conducting a structural integrity assessment of the containment building ▲ inspection of the upper containment building ▲ follow-up measures of the investigation results by the public joint investigation team -private ▲ investigation and preparation of countermeasures for insolvent construction at the level of the National Assembly ▲ compensation for damages related to insolvent construction ▲ promotion of system improvement.

A KHNP official said: “We will do our best to ensure safety so that we can communicate with local residents through transparent disclosure of information and that people can feel safe.”
