For thousands of generations, we have not been the only kind of human on Earth. Now scientists have discovered an advantage we appear to have over the Neanderthals we once shared the planet with: the thumbs of precision.
One study found that Neanderthals, who disappeared under mysterious circumstances some 40,000 years ago, had hands that were capable of grasping a tool such as a hammer. The first modern humans, homo sapiens, he found it more convenient to form a “precision grip,” in which an instrument such as a pen or stylus is held between the tip of the finger and thumb.
The findings can provide an insight into how the two types of humans were matched in terms of technological capability, perhaps helping to explain why.
