The adoption of Bitcoin is slowly starting to gain traction outside of North America and Asia. Internationally, we see large groups of companies exploring cryptocurrency payments in Europe and across South America and parts of Africa. Bitcoin is indeed an intercontinental resource, which is one of the reasons, of course, that Bitcoin still reigns as the most popular cryptocurrency in the world.
Recent reports suggest that Brazil has taken a major move towards the completely traditional adoption of Bitcoin as Oásis Supermercados, a supermarket chain based in Rio de Janeiro has started accepting cryptocurrency payments. Within this move, the company has also trained all the staff on the background of cryptocurrency, so that they can be sure that transactions are handled as efficiently as possible.
What happens when you educate people about Bitcoin: they go and invest.
Second CCN, the supermarket will accept payments in Bitcoin, Bitcoin Cash ABC and Litecoin. Douglas Andrade, one of the company directors, discussed why the company moved towards the adoption of these cryptocurrencies, stating that:
"It's really easy, it's like a credit card payment, the customer says which cryptocurrency wants to pay, the operator types in reais and the system already converts to that encryption, so just scan the QR code and the game is done. "
Oásis Supermercados currently employs 90 people, with annual sales of about $ 6.5 million, so they are by no means the biggest company in Brazil, but the adoption of crypto in this space is a big deal. Supermarkets are some of the most important brick and mortar stores, with a huge customer base. What it does is at least encourage a number of new people to continue exploring the cryptocurrency with the intention of investing maybe one day. Above all, it normalizes Bitcoin as part of our traditional commercial spaces – an important step for the adoption of Bitcoin.
The company will work with CoinWISE to process cryptographic payments. CoinWISE will handle all transfers between Bitcoin, Bitcoin Cash ABC and, of course, Litecoin and will convert payments in local currency that will be returned to the supermarket.
It will be interesting to see how many customers of Oásis Supermercados begin to use cryptocurrency as a payment option, in a period of time, who knows, encrypted payments could be the largest form of income for businesses.
