Gift cards, prepaid credit cards and newspapers now considered essential in Manitoba

A day after the toughest public health restrictions have come into effect since the start of the pandemic in Manitoba, the province announced that it will make some changes to allow the sale of gift cards, prepaid credit cards and newspapers.

The new health ordinances prohibit people from having visitors inside their home, with few exceptions, and prohibit the sale of non-essential products and services in person.

On Sunday, however, just after midnight, the Manitobans will be able to purchase the new items deemed essential, the province announced in a press release on Saturday afternoon.

Furthermore, the province announced that five other remote communities can sell essential and non-essential items at the same time. The list now includes Sapotaweyak, Berens River, Poplar River, Little Grand Rapids and Pauingassi and applies throughout northern Manitoba except Thompson, Flin Flon and The Pas.

The new health orders aim to slow the spread of COVID-19 infections by limiting opportunities for Manitobans to interact with each other.

These restrictions will remain in effect until at least 11 December.
