The management of the Generali Portugal Group, which includes Tranquilidade and Açoreana, has contacted the workers to announce the terminations and to invite workers who wish to voluntarily participate in a resolution process. The insurance company intends, however, to use the legal figure of collective dismissal as it is “the one that best defends the workers, who thus have access to unemployment benefits,” according to a source.
The company also wants to include workers who accept voluntary dismissal in the collective dismissal, which can only be done with their agreement.
In the note accessed by Jornal Económico, the administration led by Pedro Carvalho states that “as we all know, we are implementing an organizational model based on a single corporate structure. The merger of companies results in a duplication of functions that must be addressed. At the same time as managing this duplication, the aim is to adapt and downsize the company to meet the challenges of solidity, competitiveness and financial sustainability, preparing it to face current and future market conditions “.
So “it was decided, in this context, to proceed with an optimization and downsizing plan. The initial phase of this process will be based on a voluntary membership process open to all employees who wish to join freely, even with the prior consent of the Company ”, reads the note.
An official Tranquilidade source confirmed that the information was sent to all employees and made no further comment.
“The implementation model adopted maximizes social protection for employees affected by this process, in particular in accessing unemployment benefits. The model will include, in addition and among other aspects, health protection, the maintenance of favorable conditions in personal insurance and access to outplacement services to support reintegration into the labor market or, depending on the circumstances, in the planning the transition to an active retirement situation ”, announces the insurance group.
The free and voluntary membership period will begin today, November 4, and will end on November 10, 2020. “All orders will be analyzed and then employees will be contacted indicating the next steps”, adds Generali.
The process will have a first phase of voluntary applications – between 4 and 10 November; and a second phase of termination of employment contracts on the initiative of the company – after analyzing the voluntary applications.
“The termination date of the employment contract for all covered employees may vary depending on what has been agreed with them or the respective length of service of each employee,” the company says.
“The Executive Committee intends that this process be carried out with transparency, ethical sense and guaranteeing respect and dignified treatment to all employees involved”, concludes the note.
The collective redundancy plan follows the integration of the insurance companies acquired by Generali. Italian Generali acquired 100% of Seguradora Unidas – which owns Tranquilidade and Açoreana – for 510 million euros in the Apollo fund. Generali purchased AdvanceCare for 90 million euros from the same fund, bringing the value of the transaction to 600 million.
Jornal Económico knows that the project involves the maintenance of three brands: Tranquilidade, Logos and Açoreana (more focused on the Azores market).
