Premier Andrew Furey is reiterating the government’s commitment to ensure the Come By Chance oil refinery continues to operate as a refinery into the future.
The immediate problem is the importance of keeping the property in so-called “idle warm” mode during the winter months, which Furey says is in discussion with the current owner, Silverpeak.
Nonetheless, Furey says the government will ensure Come By Chance is kept as a valuable resource that it is.
He says the province is ready to facilitate any work needed to make sure the refinery comes out of the winter in “operational capacity”.
Furey says issues such as environmental responsibilities are also the province’s priorities, but says the main concern is the future of Come By Chance’s workforce.
The premier declined to comment on Silverpeak’s rejection of Origin International’s bid for the refinery, pointing out that the government is unaware of any discussions between two private companies.
