The Shams Defender of Gay Rights in Tunisia announced that the state has officially recognized the first gay marriage in the Arab world.
The organization wrote on its Facebook account: “For the first time in the history of Tunisia and the Arab world, a same-sex marriage contract between a Frenchman and a Tunisian has been officially recognized in Tunisia”.
Mounir Baatour, president of the Shams Organization, confirmed that while homosexuality is punishable by imprisonment in the country and many homosexuals are currently in Tunisian prisons, same-sex marriage has been documented and recorded on a birth certificate issued by the official departments.
The Shams Organization is the first legal human rights organization in the Arab world to defend gay rights, and has gained legal recognition after years of lawsuits in Tunisian courts.
For his part, the Moroccan Peter Tatchell, one of the activists who defend gay rights in the Arab world, said that this recognition is a milestone in the Arab world.
In turn, the Tunisian media justified this by stating that the marriage took place in France and that the young Tunisian presented the marriage contract to the Tunisian consulate in Paris and it was documented that he was married to a foreign citizen.
The media indicated that the Tunisian municipality made a mistake because the word “foreign citizen” applies to a male and a female, so it agreed to document the contract.
As for Yusra al-Daly, a representative of the Coalition of Dignity, he denied that any same-sex marriage took place in Tunisia or recognized it, indicating that this was confirmed by the Minister of Local Affairs Lotfi Zaitoun and the Mayor of Tunis Souad Abdel- Rahim.
