Face masks should be washed and tumble dried every day, according to a study

Previous research has shown that bacteria and viruses can persist on the outside of masks. The government recommends that people avoid touching the part of the cover that has been in contact with their nose or mouth and wash their hands after touching a mask.

Also, face coverings should not be placed on a table when eating in a restaurant or drinking in a pub.

Experts from Johns Hopkins University in the United States recommend keeping at least two reusable masks so that one can be washed. If hand washed, masks should be scrubbed for at least 20 seconds and then dried over high heat in a dryer.

The University of New South Wales, Sydney said it was important to wash the masks after each donning after finding viruses inside and outside the surgical and fabric masks.

Studies have shown that surgical masks can contain and thus reduce the spread of droplets and aerosols produced by a sufferer up to three to four times and homemade cloth masks up to two to four times.

Surgical masks can also protect the wearer to some degree by reducing exposure to incoming droplets and aerosols by up to six times.
