AFP and the AP news agency reported on the 15th (local time) that the head of Hermes in Greek mythology was found in the sewers of Athens, the Greek capital.

This marble head is estimated to date from the late 4th century BC to the early 3rd century BC and Greek authorities see it as part of a column used as a road sign in ancient Greece.

The statue was found near an underground sewer system at a depth of 1.3m during road repair works near the Acropolis, the landmark of Athens. The condition is said to be good enough to have a clear face shape.

Hermes in Greek mythology is the son of Zeus and is the god of herding, speech, invention, commerce, thieves and lies. He is the youngest of the 12 gods of Olympus, and is also described as a “messenger of the gods” who, under the command of Zeus, traverses this and the next.
