In a new version of its exercise guidelines, the World Health Organization stressed that exercise is essential for both the body and mind, while a sedentary lifestyle can have serious consequences. He added that close to five million deaths could be avoided every year if the population were more active.

Frequent physical activity is the key to preventing and treating heart disease, type 2 diabetes and cancer. It also reduces symptoms of depression and anxiety, cognitive decline, improves memory and overall brain health.

To get these benefits, WHO recommends it adults get two to five hours per week of moderate aerobic exercise, while the average for children and adolescents should be at least one hour per day.

The WHO has noted that an active life benefits everyone beyond their physical capabilities. “Every step counts,” Ghebreyesus said.

However, it warns of the negative impact that the coronavirus pandemic has on the regular practice of physical exercise. While there are no statistics, it is clear that containment measures have forced many to stop exercising.

“And if we don’t stay active, we run the risk of creating another pandemic,” he warns.
