Sandy beaches are far less vulnerable to sea rise than claimed in a recent European Commission study that caused “unnecessary alarm,” according to research.
Beaches will survive by migrating to land as sea levels rise as long as they have room to move and are not hindered by sea walls and other structures on the coast, research shows.
The new findings contradict claims made in March in a study by the Commission’s Joint Research Center, which provides scientific evidence to guide EU policy.
The study was touted with a press release titled “Climate Change: Life is a beach (disappearing)”.
He said half of the world’s beaches could disappear by the end of the century due to current trends in climate change and sea level
