VANCOUVER – Burnaby Mounties pulled up a Tesla that they described as being lit up like a Christmas tree on Tuesday night.
Model 3 was covered in flashing Christmas lights that changed color as it passed through Burnaby around 7pm
Though meticulously done, the string bulbs were backed up with duct tape.
“Please don’t do this,” Burnaby RCMP tweeted. “It can be dangerous if they fall into traffic, no matter the distraction.”
The owner was handed a $ 81 ticket for violating Section 4.02 of the Motor Vehicle Act with his “unauthorized lamp”.
Mounties described the driver in his early thirties as highly cooperative and is not surprised to have been stopped.
Even so, the fine was considered heavy by some.
“This is ridiculous. Was the officer having a bad day? How about a warning?” Wrote one Twitter user.
“There are better and – believe it or not – legal ways to spread the holiday cheer,” argued another.
BCAA acknowledged that we could all use a little extra cheer this year, but said they don’t recommend putting extra lights on the outside of vehicles.
“If you want to decorate, you can decorate the interior of your car,” advised automotive specialist Josh Smythe. “Make sure you put something on the outside like artificial elf legs or deer antlers on the windows, that they are properly secured and will stay on your vehicle while you drive.”
ICBC said there are no specific insurance issues associated with decorations, but warned: “If the decorations on a vehicle have led to a serious accident, it could impact the driver’s insurance rates; however, this is true of any attributable accident. “
The Tesla driver was given three days to turn off the lights on his car. He told the officer he would do it right away.
