Dozens of workers have been laid off at the Beaver Brook Antimony Mine near Glenwood after a tough year for the industry.
A company spokesperson says the majority of their workforce, comprised of more than 100 people, has been laid off, with further layoffs scheduled for next week.
The project was only restarted last year with the backing of Chinese investors, but stopped in March at the start of the pandemic.
Although limited operations were launched this summer, the company decided to suspend the work indefinitely this week.
The company says production costs tend to increase during the winter. With their finances suffering from the impacts of a difficult year, they determined that it was not possible to continue operations for the next season.
A small team will be retained to meet their needs and monitor the situation in case it becomes feasible to restart the project once more.
