Earlier this week, an Ethereum startup in Serbia found that its advertisements on Google were not shown in some regions.
As the company further investigated the case, it found that the keyword "Ethereum" was completely banned on Google Ads and is not offered to users on the platform.
Why do companies have problems with Ethereum Google Ads?
During the last three days, the startup attempted to contact Google to receive clarification on the removal of Ethereum advertisements.
On January 12, a startup representative said that Google did not respond to the company and wrote:
We've been using Google ads in the last 6 months to help us get more visibility for our intelligent contract auditing services and we've seen a strange change in recent days. It seems that Google has completely included a keyword on the Ethereum blacklist. Some of the keywords that contain "ethereum" in our campaigns will no longer serve ads starting January 9th.
It is likely that the company has not blacklisted Ethereum or cryptocurrency ads in general, but is moving slowly to allow publicity due to the large number of frauds and fraudulent transactions it has seen in the cryptocurrency industry at the outset. of 2018.
In September 2018, Google announced the resumption of cryptocurrency ads on its platform after banning them in March of the same year.
In March, when the search engine giant initially imposed a general ban on cryptocurrency ads, Google executive Scott Spender said:
We do not have a crystal ball to know where the future will go with cryptocurrencies, but we have seen damage or potential damage to consumers that constitutes an area we want to tackle with extreme caution.
At the time, analysts suggested that Google would ban cryptocurrency ads due to an influx of promotions related to the scam on the platform. Five months later, under a rigorous guide yet to be disclosed to the public, the technology giant began to allow cryptocurrency announcements – but only to a limited group of companies.
To ensure that scam ads are not published on the platform, the company has stated that it will initiate a rigorous evaluation of all cryptocurrency ads and will only allow a subset of cryptocurrency advertising.
Considering that Google is taking a small part of cryptocurrency ads to its platform with caution, at least in the near future, it is possible that startups or less known companies in the cryptocurrency ecosystem can not have their advertising applications accepted by the platform advertising of the company.
Do not expect Google to accept many ads
Google's disapproval of advertising documents is not exclusive to Ethereum or any other community within the crypto.
"We are concerned that Google is specifically targeting Ethereum for some reason and we wanted to see if we as a community could put pressure on the Google Ads team to adapt our keyword policy or at least provide a reasonable explanation for such discriminatory regulations." said the startup
Until the conglomerate has confidence in its ability to sufficiently filter scams and advertisements that promote fraudulent activity, Google will likely continue to be wary of the acceptance of encrypted ads.
