Sudbury’s COVID-19 case count fell for the second consecutive day on Friday, with no new confirmed cases and one just resolved, for a total assets of 13.
The total number of confirmed cases announced by Sudbury Public Health and the districts remained at 228. Of these, 215 have now been declared resolved.
The Rainbow District School Board announced in a letter to parents and guardians on Friday that a previously announced case in a student at Northeastern Elementary School in Garson has been resolved.
The council thanked the students and staff who were asked to isolate themselves as part of the COVID-19 protocols and welcomed the students who had learned from a distance.
Outbreaks reported to Extendicare Falconbridge and Extendicare York earlier this week remain active, following positive tests by staff members at both sites, but no new cases have been announced in recent days.
Public Health will again update the COVID-19 case data on www.phsd.ca on Saturday at 4pm. The health unit updated the data twice a day on weekdays, at 10:30 am and 4:00 pm, but plans to switch to a single-day update at 4:00 pm, starting Monday.
While it was a good day in Sudbury, Ontario, overall, it reported another daily record of new COVID-19 cases with 1,855 laboratory-confirmed cases reported on Friday.
These include 517 new cases in Peel and 494 in Toronto, with both regions starting the week under the province’s most restrictive lockdown measures. There were 189 new cases reported in York and 130 new cases in the Halton region. Together, the broad Toronto region accounted for nearly 75% of the new cases.
The new totals pushed the seven-day average to 1,489 cases, another record.
20 new deaths were reported on Friday, with 3,595 deaths now attributed to the coronavirus in Ontario.
There have now been 111,216 confirmed cases in total in the province, and Ontario Health Minister Christine Elliott said 1,451 cases have been resolved in the past 24 hours.
Admissions dropped slightly to 541 after several days of increasing numbers, with 556 patients in Ontario hospitals on Thursday. The week began with 484 patients in hospital.
Of those currently in hospital, 151 are in intensive care and 101 require a ventilator.
Ontario announced Friday that five public health regions will move to stricter levels of restrictions on the province’s COVID-19 response framework.
Windsor-Essex, which reported 51 new cases on Friday, will move to the red “control” level, while Haldimand-Norfolk will move to orange “limit” and Hastings-Prince Edward, Lambton and
Northwestern regions will change to yellow “protect”.
“Over the past week we have seen a change in the trends of key public health indicators in the provincial regions and by moving these five regions to a new level in the picture, we can ensure that the targeted measures necessary to stop the spread of the virus are in place. and allow us to keep our schools and businesses open, ”Elliott said in a statement.
