The cancellation of all non-emergency surgeries at the university hospital comes as LHSC is working to not only keep up with its smooth flow of procedures, but also to recover a backlog of approximately 2,800 operations canceled from the spring lockout.
Public health officials have identified “staff violations” in physical distancing rules and the use of personal protective equipment, including wearing face masks, as factors in the outbreak, Mackie said.
“Most of the staff certainly obeyed the rules, but we had some situations where the staff weren’t,” Mackie said, adding that public health inspectors toured the hospital and provided recommendations to LHSC.
“There were some things where, as we walked through UH, we found places where some space adjustments could help encourage the kind of distance we needed. . . . They (LHSC) have since modified those spaces, so they don’t encourage large close gatherings. “
Further investigation into the outbreak and how it spread from one unit to five others over the course of 17 days is now in the hands of LHSC’s infection prevention team, Mackie said.
He said he is confident the measures the LHSC and the health unit are implementing will help resolve the outbreak.
“The measures in place are very significant. There is always a question about compliance. The LHSC administration has very strong conformity assessment review functions in place, ”Mackie said.
“We have the right measures in place. We have a good system to make sure they are followed up. We should see this turn the corner. “
