Gamers spent thousands of pounds on so-called loot boxes during the pandemic, with experts warning that the problem has gotten “really tough”.
The NHS Northern Gambling Service said welfare concerns for young gamblers have been exacerbated by people having time on their hands during the lockout.
Loot sees players spend money for a chance to unlock items that would help them throughout the game.
The government said it was reviewing to see if they were a form of gambling.
Ben Lawson-Green, 25, of Whitby, said: “Over the years my brother, my father and I have spent thousands of dollars.
“Normally I bet on Fifa on Saturday nights. Before you know it, you have bet 50 or 60 pounds. I find it incredibly addicting because I always want the best players.
“I wouldn’t say it’s a problem. I guess when you spend a lot of money on it it could become a problem.
“Is it gambling? I guess it is. It’s just like pushing buttons on a slot machine. It’s always ‘what if?’.”
