The Swiss airline, in red due to the crown pandemic, will save on cabin crew from 2021 to 2023. The airline announced Friday evening that a corresponding savings package had been negotiated with the cabin crew union ( Kapers).
The measures are limited in time, it is said. They would be put to union members for a vote as soon as possible. The collective labor agreement between Kapers and the airline, valid today, will continue until at least 2025 after the end of the measures in 2023.
The savings package includes specific measures to reduce costs and downsizing. Employees should be encouraged to take early retirement as well as part time. Overall, this will result in a cost reduction of around ten percent. Natural fluctuation will also lead to savings of an additional ten percent.
The teams are thinning out
According to information from Tamedia, there is also a thinning of the long-range crews. From next March, Swiss will fly to destinations such as Hong Kong, Singapore or San Francisco with at least one less flight attendant.
Also, teams should rotate faster. After a long-haul flight, the on-site stay should only last one night instead of the usual two.
Apparently there are also wage cuts. From March to August 2021, the short-term salary of employees earning less than 4,000 francs will no longer be raised to 100, but only to 95 percent. In the months following the end of short-term work, September to December 2021, all crew members will therefore need to be prepared for a reduced pay.
Less holidays
Further cuts will follow: in 2022, the thirteenth monthly salary for cabin executives will be eliminated for one year. Holidays are reduced to two days for the entire cabin crew. And in 2023 an otherwise pending wage step will be postponed for all concerned.
Switzerland suffers heavily from the crown pandemic. The Lufthansa branch loses nearly two million francs a day. With the release of the nine-month data on Thursday, the airline had already announced job cuts and stood at around 1,000 jobs over the next two years. (ise)
