Comet C / 2020 M3, a rare comet found approaching Earth

Comet C / 2020 M3 was captured near Earth on Saturday 14 November. The presence of this comet was also discovered last June. Then an approach is also noted and it is in a position that these astronomers can easily find.

Furthermore, this comet is also simple and we can see it with the help of binoculars. On a note, our sky is quite dark.

We can see the comet in the Orion constellation with a telescope because it is not as bright as NEOWISE.

Komet C / 2020 M3

A comet called C / 2020 M3 has taken off from the sky and is a comet that has been discovered since last June. It finally reached the point of perihelion or closest distance to the Sun on October 25.

The ATLAS telescopic system, two telescopes developed by scientists at the University of Hawaii, is an early warning system for asteroid or comet collisions.

Then the telescope system discovered Comet Atlas or C / 2020 M3 in June. This comet crosses the earth at the closest distance, which is 33,313,846 million miles or approximately 53,613,439 kilometers.

This distance is the safest distance for the NEO object to approach the Earth. The distance of Comet C / 2020 M3, according to scientists, is equal to the distance of the Earth from the orbit of Mars.

As the comet approaches Earth on November 14, Comet 2159 will return. Therefore, more than a century later, we will return to observe this comet.

This will obviously be very impressive and rare for a phenomenon that we can record as a legacy of knowledge for our children and grandchildren.

How can you see it

When we see the comet crossing the dark sky, at first glance we can see that the comet is not moving. However, you can see the stars in the area, wait about 15 minutes, then return to the comet’s position.

Then there is a chance to see if the location changes. The speed of the traveling comet C / 2020 M3 is about 32,019 miles per hour, or about 51,529 kilometers per hour.

At this speed we may be able to see it night after night. The comet appears in the sky with a trajectory similar to the diameter of the moon in 6 hours.

The shape or form is very small with a greenish color. Although it will look like a small fireball but without a tail and spread out, the show it puts on is quite amazing.

For latitudes, Comet C / 2020 M3 usually measures around a mile or 1-2 kilometers. As it moves into the perihelion position, which traps the sun’s heat, the gas in the comet swells.

This creates a fireball that is large enough to fit a comet. Michael Mattiazzo is an inventor and comet observing expert from Australia.

It estimates that this comet will develop a coma with a diameter of 211,000 miles or 340,000 kilometers. This is almost the same as the distance from the Earth to the Moon (239,000 miles).

Where will we find it?

Comet C / 2020 M3 is located in the constellation of Orion, near the star Bellatrix. So if your sky is dark and you have binoculars with all the hints on how to find them, you will find this comet to be a “blurry star”.

As Michael Jaeger said on November 7th through his social media accounts. He saw the comet.

Later it turned out that the comet was also not far from the great Orion Nebula (M42). The Running Man Nebula also appears above the Great Orion Nebula in this long exposure. The visual size is between 7.0 and 8.0.

This comet can be seen with binoculars in the dark sky. Although this comet is not as bright as NEOWISE, the sensation when looking at the comet deserves attention. After all, Comet C / 2020 M3 can be seen once in a lifetime about once a century. (R10 / HR online)
