China lands on the moon in the first mission to collect samples in 40 years

China has landed a spacecraft on the moon to conduct the first mission to recover lunar samples in more than 40 years, the official Xinhua News agency said.

Chang’e-5, which landed on Tuesday at the end, is preparing for about 48 hours of work on the lunar surface, Xinhua said. A lander module is expected to collect about two kilograms of material, some of it by drilling underground, and seal it in a shipping container, according to the report.

The touchdown occurred north of Mons Rumker in the Oceanus Procellarum, also known as the Ocean of Storms, on the near side of the moon, Xinhua said, citing an announcement from the Chinese National Space Administration.
