China became the second country in the world to have planted a flag on the moon after the United States.
More than 50 years ago, the United States planted the stars and stripes on the moon for the first time.
China sent its Chang’e-5 spacecraft to the moon from Beijing on Thursday at 11.10pm Beijing time (15.10 GMT), state broadcaster CCTV said, as mission engineers watching control screens applauded at long.
The country’s National Space Administration has released images of its five-star red flag hoisted on the surface of the moon.

The images were taken by a camera from the Chang’e-5 space probe, named after the mythical Chinese moon goddess, before she left the moon on Thursday to return to Earth.
The Chinese state media agency, Xinhua, reported the landing citing the China National Space Administration.
A module carrying lunar rocks and soil was in orbit after activating a powerful thrust engine, Chinese officials said on the mission, which was launched from the southern province of Hainan.
The spacecraft also brought the first lunar rock samples to be collected in four decades.
Chinese officials said the spacecraft is expected to land on Earth around the middle of this month
