When the driver, who was driving remotely from the vehicle in front, presses the button, the truck immediately switches to autonomous driving mode.

“You requested membership. Take your hand off the handle. Take your foot off the pedal.”

Then, as if measuring with a ruler, they approach the vehicle in front at intervals of 15 m.

After a while, another melts and three 40-ton trucks run along the road like a train.

This is truck platooning using autonomous driving technology, but this time it was the first time to successfully demonstrate the highway after only racing on a test road.

Although only the driver of the car in front has the steering wheel, the two rear cars do nothing, but when they encounter a construction section, they freely change lanes along the car in front of them and when an obstacle appears, the three brakes almost simultaneously.

What if another car breaks down in the middle of the line?

The following trucks automatically double the distance to ensure safety and when the intervening car leaves the distance is again maintained by 15 meters.

Countries around the world competing for autonomous driving technology are focusing not only on passenger cars, but also on platooning such trucks.

This is because platoon driving prevents the air resistance of the car in front, improving the fuel efficiency of the cars in the rear by 6-8% and reducing the risk of accidents by preventing sleepiness.

Also, if trucks congregate at shorter intervals, they take up fewer roads and should reduce traffic congestion.

The government, which developed the platooning technology by spending 13.4 billion won two years ago, said it would be possible to commercialize the highways by 2023.
