Can mPOS optimize sales of meals in flight?

With the global mobile point of sale (mPOS) market designed to experience a compound annual growth rate (CAGR) of 18.8% from 2017 to 2026, many solution providers are looking to use partnerships as a push to grab a largest share of the growing market.

Around the mPOS space, suppliers are collaborating, merging or making acquisitions. In January mPOS Tracker, PYMNTS tracks the latest developments.

Among the latest players to make an acquisition is DIVA, a digital business accelerator and a POS device provider. The company has recently acquired a 30 percent stake in Pawoon's small and medium-sized (SME) payment hardware and software provider. The DIVA investment will help the development of Pawoon's fuel-based products and the acquisition of traders, while DIVA hopes to achieve easier expansion in the food and beverage sector.

Two FinTech companies in Poland are also tightening closer ties. iCompass, a software provider that provided the technology for the first Polish mPOS platform, started a merger with Braintri, a company that develops mobile apps for leading Polish banks. The merger aims to help companies bring their products and operations to foreign markets. Once the merger is complete, FinTech companies will be rebranded.

However, not all mergers and acquisitions are going accordingly. The Competition and Market Authority (CMA) of U.K. is reviewing the acquisition of iZettle by PayPal. After completing the first phase of its investigation, the CMA announced in November that the acquisition of iZettle could harm competition in the UK device market, as well as ultimately causing less competition in its emerging market of omnichannel payments. . The CMA is now moving into phase two of the investigation.

mPOS helps in-flight payments to take off

Meanwhile, in South Africa, mPOS flew high. The South African airline FlySafair has distributed MPOS solutions for in-flight purchases on its aircraft this year, where devices can facilitate in-flight meal payments, collect useful sales data and speed up the reconciliation process for flight.

However, not just a mPOS solution could do the trick. In a recent interview with PYMNTS, FlySafair, IT and Innovation Manager, Eswee Vorster explained how the airline helped design the mPOS solution software to work both during flights and for airport check-in, and how FlySafair intends to develop new features to customize the payment experience.
