Scientists have found evidence of frozen methane bubbles being released deep beneath the surface of the Arctic Ocean.
The finding is significant because methane has a much greater warming effect than CO2 and sea warming and melting permafrost in the Arctic could eventually release large quantities.
However, the Russian and Swedish researchers warned that the results of their Laptev Sea expedition were preliminary and should have been checked and confirmed before being submitted to a peer-reviewed journal.
On their Facebook page, the International Siberian Study Shelf Expedition team wrote: “This may be the first complete observation of the active release of methane hydrates on the Siberian-Arctic slope system.
