A British company has won a contract to extract oxygen from rocks on the moon.

Metalysis in Rotherham, which extracts metals from metal oxides trapped in minerals for the electronics, aviation and automotive industries, has been awarded a contract worth approximately £ 250,000 from the European Space Agency (ESA) to adapt its technique to moon rock.

A single kilogram of rock on the moon can hold up to 500g of oxygen locked up in its minerals. The task of figuring out how to extract the precious gas from the lunar surface is now up to Metalysis.
