A radio telescope in the jungles of Puerto Rico that has played a vital role in space research for over 50 years and that appears in a James Bond film is at risk of collapse.

Engineers are studying how to save the Arecibo Observatory after two support cables have failed.

Michael Nolan, a former installation director, said so National Geographic that the chances that the observatory could be repaired were “probably 50-50”. It is the second largest telescope of its kind in the world and is still used by scientists.
