A flurry of drug overdoses over the course of a single day led Blood Tribe police to warn the public about a “highly concentrated” batch of drugs.
In the 24-hour period beginning at noon on Friday, police and EMS responded to 15 overdoses, as well as one death.
“Community members are urged to check on their vulnerable loved ones at this time,” the ISP said. Farica Prince in an emailed statement on Saturday.
Opioid overdoses have skyrocketed in Alberta during the COVID-19 pandemic. According to provincial data for the first half of 2020, 301 people died from accidental opioid overdoses in Alberta from April to June, compared with 148 from January to March.
Blood Tribe Police said free naloxone kits are available at the Blood Tribe Detox Center. Naloxone is a life-saving antidote that can reverse overdoses.
