The network of professional services and accounting organization Deloitte said that a technological innovation of data known as "Blockchain" could "transform" the Irish supply chain of beef.
The company claims that traditional supply chains must be changed to meet the requirements of a growing global demand for beef.
According to Deloitte, this means that there is a greater need for end-to-end traceability, as well as guarantees of quality and safety – things that would be easier to record and check if data technology improved.
In a recent report called "Beefing up Blockchain", Deloitte proposes that the way to achieve this goal is to use Blockchain, a data recording system that is "safe for design", which means that it has integrated measures to prevent the modification of data.
The Deloitte report focuses on the beef sector in Ireland and the benefits that Blockchain can bring to the sector.
Among these advantages, according to the report, costs in the supply chain are reduced, thanks to improved data communication, improved quality assurance and more "lean" import and export processes.
Deloitte says that safety and traceability will also be improved with this technology.
The report goes on to say that the "innate" transparency of Blockchain will ensure that the operators are observing agreed standards and procedures and that the data repositories will lead to a simpler review process.
This, it seems, will provide farmers with "greater transparency throughout the food chain, giving them access to valuable information".
However, the report insists that the application of technology "must be seamless".
"Existing agricultural practices should not be disrupted to allow for adoption, nor should farmers be affected by huge financial burdens," he said.
