Many IT companies are starting the new year with numerous kick-offs. They want to keep up with the competition and keep abreast of new technological trends. Commendable, but they must be careful not to confuse the euphoria and the determination for the facts.
SAP seems excited about showing new technologies, making the lives of its partners and customers even more difficult. Although good ideas, intelligent prototypes and new marketing concepts are important, they are not ready-made products for everyday life with an ERP system.
It's nice that SAP has rediscovered its pioneering spirit – the SAP community can almost unanimously agree on this. However, the CEO of SAP Bill McDermott too often misses the good ideas for the finished products that are ready to go and will enrich the lives of its customers. Which is very rare, as a well-known example shows.
Blockchain: famous, but all that is ready
Yes, blockchain is very likely a very important and relevant technology. However, apart from Bitcoin and other cryptocurrencies, what has it achieved so far? The phase of testing, experimentation and trial and error has just begun. It seems that every two weeks there is a new situation, a new fraud, a new catastrophe – and the blockchain is always right in the middle of it.
Naturally, experts and IT professionals will find a solution to every blockchain problem – in the end. Until then, the use of technology remains risky and, what may seem even worse for companies, unprofitable.
However, as always, SAP seems to think that it has already found the solution. With its Leonardo framework, the company believes it has mastered every challenge regarding the blockchain and could not be more wrong.
Even SAP can make honest mistakes; This is not the problem. The problem is that, by turning a blind eye to the dark side of the blockchain, SAP is intentionally endangering its customers.
For the coming year, one can only hope that SAP's new year resolution implies a more acute sense of reality and more in-depth checks on the facts. After all, the ERP realm is not a land ever-ever – but a reality for many people.
