Healthcare innovation was the focus of the conference Health: Further in Nashville this week. There was no shortage of startups who were launching ideas and seeking funding; every other person I came across seemed to have the next big idea of turning the industry.
While conference founder and CEO Marcus Whitney told me about the major trends conference participants were arguing that they would have the best impact on health systems, I noticed a couple of additional noteworthy topics : blockchain can open up new possibilities for health system innovation, while hospitals that do not develop the infrastructure for innovation could close opportunities to collaborate with physicians with great ideas. If the number of people stuck in sessions dealing with blockchain was an indication, blockchain could be the next big thing in the health sector. Few understand it; many are struggling to learn more.
In essence, the technology connects and protects, through cryptography, a list of expanding records, known as blocks. The best advice I've heard from a speaker: do not focus on HOW it works; focus on WHAT it does.
Brian McCuller, JD, CPA of LBMC offered these potential uses for blockchain:
- Transactions of financial services, such as money transfers
- Internet of Things Integration (IOT), which allows smart devices to communicate with each other using "smart contracts"
