Scientists have been busy this year. Those who didn’t develop vaccines broke through books. Our scientific experts have sifted through the best of them. There are books here to understand the brain, the environment, and even the entire universe (well, most).

This year could have been worse. For example, a rogue Higgs boson could have “tunneled” to a different value, destabilizing all matter in an apocalyptic bubble that expands at the speed of light. It would have been really bad. But, says physicist Brian Greene, it’s a fortunately implausible way to end life. Much more likely is that the stars, planets and galaxies will slowly separate, until all that has ever thought, loved or experienced
