The University of Bahrain will become one of the first educational institutions to begin issuing blockchain-based certificates using the Blockcerts system.
Bahrain is a small Middle Eastern country in the Arabian Gulf located between Qatar and Saudi Arabia. It is famous for its oil exports and the wealthy family in power, the House of Khalifa, which is estimated to be worth 4 billion dollars. The country has recently started an impetus to advance technology within the nation.
Professor Riyad Hamzah, president of the University, spoke about the enthusiasm of the project institute: "We at UOB are delighted to be the pioneers in the use of blockchain in the Mena region to better serve our students."
Blockcerts is a globally recognized open standard for the registration of certificates or other information on a blockchain in a secure and verifiable manner. All data stored on the system is securely signed by encryption and is freely available for viewing and sharing online. The University of Bahrain collaborated with Learning Machine to integrate the Blockcerts system into its operations.
The system is part of a wider university guide to digitize its processes and make ownership and portability for mobile and remote students easier. Cameron Mirza, Head of Strategy at the University, referred to the 2016 transformation plan of the institutes that included the emergence of emerging and disruptive technologies as part of its roadmap.
"The potential of the blockchain goes far beyond the cryptocurrency and its potential use in the field of education is fascinating and exciting" He said.
The Issue Machine Issue system has become an integral part of the spread and growth of Blockcerts technology. Beyond the Middle East, several government offices, academies and private organizations in America, Europe, Australia and the Caribbean have adopted technology as a way to issue secure online certificates.
