The blockchain software company based in New York and the development studio Ethereum ConsenSys acquired the asteroid mining company Planetary Resources, Inc. through an asset purchase agreement. Following the acquisition, Planetary Resources president and CEO Chris Lewicki and General Councilor Brian Israel will join ConsenSys team, according to an official press release.

Prior to co-founding and joining the management team at Planetary Resources, Chris Lewicki worked as a flight director for the Spirit and Opportunity Mars rovers and the Phoenix Mars lander at NASA's Jet Propulsion Laboratory (National Aeronautics and Space Administration).

"Over the course of nearly a decade, Planetary Resources has pioneered technology, business, law and politics, and has brought the promise of space resources irreversibly closer to the reach of humanity," he said. Lewicki, enthusiastic.

Speaking further, he recognized the extraordinary achievements of his former team and praised the new synergy with ConsenSys.

Brian Israel worked in the US State Department Legal Counsel for eight years before joining Planetary Resources in 2017. He was responsible for the international legal dimensions of outer space, the oceans and the issues of international environmental governance, and has been representative to the United Nations space law body. He provided insights into the commercial relevance of Ethereum's smart contracts for space exploration and development.

"The Ethereum Intelligent Contracting Feature is a natural solution for private order and space commerce – the only domain of unordered human activity around territorial sovereignty – in which a wide range of actors from a growing number of countries must coordinate and negotiate ", Israel noted.
