Foxconn is the world’s largest contract electronics manufacturer for companies such as Apple, Hewlett Packard, and Dell. The Taiwanese company is most famous for assembling iPhones for Apple.
According to a source cited by Reuters, Foxconn has begun building assembly lines for iPad tablets and MacBook laptops at its plant in Northeast Vietnam’s Bac Giang province, which will become operational in the first half of 2021. The new lines in Il Vietnam will also take over part of the production currently made in China, adds the source, without specifying how much of the production made in China will be transferred abroad.
“It’s a decision that comes at the request of Apple, which wants to diversify its production following the trade war,” the source said on condition of anonymity.
On Tuesday, Foxconn Group, officially named Hon Hai Precision Industry Co Ltd, announced it is investing $ 270 million to create a new subsidiary called FuKang Technology Co Ltd, an initiative that sources say intends to support the group’s expansion into Vietnam. .
According to research firm TrendForce, all iPad tablets are currently assembled in China, so Foxconn’s decision means that, for the first time, iPad tablets will be manufactured outside of China.
In August of this year, Foxconn president Liu Young-way said the China-US trade war had split the world in two, adding that the Taiwanese group intends to create “two separate supply chains”.
Other companies that assemble iPad tablets for Apple are the Taiwanese company Compal Electronics Inc and the Chinese company BYD Electronic International Co Ltd.
