FortisBC rates go up

FortisBC received interim approval from the BCUC for a 4.36% increase in its general electricity tariffs in 2021.
The change will cause the average customer who uses around 12,000 kilowatt hours per year to see their monthly bills increase by around $ 7.30 per month.
“We strive to operate efficiently and to keep rates at the lowest possible cost,” said Diane Roy, vice president, regulatory affairs, FortisBC. “However, increases are sometimes needed so that FortisBC can make the necessary system improvements and long-term investments that ensure our customers always have the power they need, when they need it.”
The privately owned company says it plans to spend $ 72 million next year on electrical infrastructure improvements.
This includes the annual investments the company makes to support its cluster structures, power lines and equipment, as well as work on multi-year upgrade projects. Right now, FortisBC says it is making major upgrades to two hydroelectric plants and plans to upgrade three of its substations and associated transmission lines in 2021.
These rates are approved on a provisional and refundable basis. A final BCUC decision on permanent rates is expected in early 2021.
