The Food and Agriculture Organization and the World Food Program have warned that Burkina Faso, South Sudan, northeastern Nigeria and Yemen are at risk of famine.

A report from the two organizations states: “Some people living in these four regions face critical hunger and that escalating conflicts and growing difficulties in obtaining humanitarian aid can lead to the risk of starvation.”

The report indicated the convergence of several factors, including “conflicts, economic deterioration, climatic situation and the Corona epidemic, pushing the population to sink further into the emergency phase of food insecurity”.

The report stressed that “these four regions are far from being isolated cases, as the world map shows that acute food insecurity rates have reached new heights in the world.”

The report adds that “16 countries are threatened by increased levels of acute hunger”. These countries are Venezuela, Haiti, Ethiopia, Somalia, Cameroon, Central African Republic, Mali, Niger, Sierra Leone, Democratic Republic of Congo, Mozambique, Zimbabwe, Sudan, Lebanon, Syria and Afghanistan.
