HOUSTON – Stellar observers will be treated for a rare event, namely the two large planets Jupiter and Saturn will pass close to the Earth. This event is expected to occur on December 21, 2020.
Eventually, Jupiter and Saturn passed close to Earth about 800 years ago. This is not only the winter solstice, but also its closest alignment since 1226.

Throughout 2020, Saturn and Jupiter are visible close together in the night sky, but this conjunction is known as the “great conjunction” because, involving the two largest bodies in our Solar System, it will appear smaller than the diameter of the Full Moon.

“Alignment between the two planets is quite rare, it occurs once every 20 years or so, but this conjunction is very rare due to how close the planets will appear,” said astronomer Patrick Hartigan of Rice University, quoted by IFL Science, Wednesday (25 / 11/2020).
Between December 16 and December 25, these two large planets will appear one-fifth the diameter of the moon, just 0.1 degrees apart, and at their closest approach on December 21.
