Splitting in this way is caused by underground forces that stretch the Earth’s lithospheric layer until it breaks apart.

Dr. Stamps said, “The modern-day disintegration rate is millimeters per year, so it will take millions of years for new oceans to form.

“The extension rate is greater in the north, so we will see the new oceans forming there first.”

Dr Stamps and her colleagues collected GPS data along this part of the African continent to map where the extension is occurring.

The East African Rift System extends over 3,000 kilometers from the Gulf of Aden, between Yemen and Somalia, and south to Zimbabwe.
