Adapted to the Nordschleife: the R variant crowns the Golf 8

For years VW has kept a space above the GTI free and is intended for the Golf R. The R variant is of course also available in the eighth generation of the Golf. As usual with more power than before, improved all-wheel drive and Nordschleife functionality.

About a year after the debut of the new Golf, VW is now crowning the compact car series with the flagship model. The 320 hp R variant of the five-door and station wagon can now be ordered at prices starting at 48,000 euros.

The 2.0-liter turbocharged petrol engine, familiar from its predecessor, takes over the driving of the most powerful series-produced Golf to date. In its new phase of expansion, the four-cylinder has 320 hp and a maximum torque of 420 Newton meters, available between 2100 and 5350 tour. This corresponds to an increase of 20 HP and 20 Newton meters compared to the discontinued generation. Power is transmitted via a seven-speed dual-clutch gearbox. On paper, the performance is identical to its predecessor: sprinting from zero to 100 km / h takes 4.7 seconds, with a maximum of 250 km / h. The top speed can optionally be increased to 270 km / h.

All-wheel drive is also more powerful than before, as it no longer distributes the driving force variably between the axles but also between the rear wheels (torque vectoring). In extreme cases, up to 100 percent of the torque that can be subtracted is directed to the wheel on the outside of the curve. As a result, the rear, VW promises, swings more readily around the curve, making the car seem more agile.

R performance with drift mode

In addition, the Wolfsburg-based company has networked all-wheel drive with electronic differential lock and adaptive chassis for the first time. The driver can select the desired feature by pressing the “R” button on the steering wheel. The well-known driving modes with more comfort-oriented and particularly sporty settings are available as standard. Those who order the optional “R-Performance” package can also use a drift mode and a profile specially adapted to the Nürburgring’s Nordschleife. In addition, all parameters can be adjusted individually.

The Golf top differs from the more civilized versions also for the frame configuration. The body has been lowered by 2 centimeters and the springs and stabilizers are narrower. The camber on the front axle has been widened to allow for higher cornering speeds. There is also specially adapted progressive steering and an 18-inch brake system. A flap controlled Akrapovic exhaust system should deliver the right sound.

Visually, the R model consists of, among other things, extra-large air intakes at the front, a blue cross member on the radiator grille and a glossy black diffuser with four tailpipes. The equipment also includes sports seats, a navigation system, ambient light and 18-inch wheels. The surcharge compared to the previous model is around 4000 euros.
