ABB Ltd. said Wednesday that it was awarded a two-year contract by NASA to allow the U.S. government agency to take space photos of planets outside the solar system for the first time.

The Swiss engineering firm said it will supply NASA with electronic cores for high-sensitivity cameras, which it produced in collaboration with Canadian imaging technology company Nuvu Cameras Inc.

ABB said the nuclei will travel into space on the Roman Nancy Grace Space Telescope in 2025.

“The Roman mission is a $ 3.2 billion project that is expected to be 100 to 1,000 times more powerful for exoplanet imaging than what is achieved on the ground today,” said Marc Corriveau, General Manager of ABB Measurement. & Analytics Canada.

ABB has not disclosed the financial terms of the contract.
