EDMONTON – After setting new records for daily and active cases and hospitalizations several times this week, Alberta broke another COVID-19 milestone on Friday.
Dr Deena Hinshaw reported 1,828 cases of the disease from more than 17,200 tests, equivalent to the highest positive rate of the Alberta pandemic to date: 10.5%.
“This positivity rate is a tragic milestone and should affect us all,” the chief medical officer said.
“I want to emphasize the severity of the increase in case numbers that we are seeing and how crucial it is to reduce the spread and bend the curve down again.”
There are now 18,243 cases of coronavirus in Alberta, with 99 of the 533 patients hospitalized in intensive care.
The province also reported another 15 deaths from COVID-19, bringing the death toll to 590.
Hinshaw encouraged the Albertans to behave well this weekend, avoid the crowds and opt for a sidewalk retreat if possible.
“By resisting the urge to socialize this weekend and limiting your close contact with others, you are not only protecting yourself and those closest to you from the virus, but you are playing a vital role in helping to break the chains of transmission, which can save lives. “
AHS President and CEO Dr. Verna Yiu joined Hinshaw on Friday afternoon and talked about the province’s contingency plans related to field hospitals and her efforts to hire more contact locators.
