Oliver Dowden said that without the warning that the series uses artistic license, young viewers could “confuse fiction for fact”.
The current season of the series, released by Netflix in early November, describes a tumultuous time during the reign of Queen Elizabeth II in the 1980s and often features clumsily members of the British royal family.
Dowden’s suggestion has been criticized by some historians who don’t find it necessary, but on Monday he said on the series that:
“It’s a well-crafted work of fiction, so as with other Netflix TV productions, it should be very clear at first that this is exactly the case.”
Netflix does not usually inform its viewers that the dramas being broadcast are fictional at the beginning of each episode.
“Without this, I fear that a generation of viewers who have not lived through these events may be mistaking fiction as reality,” added Dowden.
The minister plans to make a formal request to Netflix for a “health warning” at the beginning of each episode, according to The Sun.
“The Crown” is one of Netflix’s most popular series, depicting four decades of Queen Elizabeth II’s reign over four seasons.
The current season features the beginning of Prince Charles ‘relationship with Princess Diana, the breakup of their marriage and Charles’ extramarital affair with Camilla Parker-Bowles.
Other events featured are the misunderstandings between Conservative Prime Minister Margaret Thatcher and director Elizabeth II, as well as the Queen’s relationship with her husband, Prince Philip and their children.
Dowden asked for a warning after a similar suggestion came from Earl Spencer, Princess Diana’s brother.
Several real biographers and journalists have previously criticized the series for deviating from the facts, but its creator, Peter Morgan, has never claimed that “The Crown” is completely faithful to historical reality.
