A member of the Committee for the fight against the new coronavirus in Tunisia said today, “Monday”, that the epidemic has been controlled in the country for five consecutive days without any infection being recorded.
Dr Nassaf Ben Ali, a member of the committee and director of the Observatory for Emerging Diseases, said Tunisia has effectively controlled the outbreak, but that preventive health measures must continue.
For the fifth consecutive day, Tunisia did not register any virus infections, either locally or with arrivals from abroad.
“The challenge during the next phase is to control the imported cases so that they do not cause the virus to spread to society,” Ben Ali explained in his statement to the Tunisian news agency.
The third and final phase of easing restrictions on targeted quarantine will end on June 14, while the authorities will fully open borders on the 27 of the same month for international flights.
Earlier on Monday, Health Minister Abdul Latif al-Makki said the ministry will conduct thorough investigations by selecting random samples in tourist towns to make sure they are free of the virus.
According to the latest update of the Ministry of Health, the number of people infected with the virus has reached 1,087 cases, of which 982 recovered and 56 cases still carrying the virus and are in the follow-up phase, while the number of deaths has stabilized to 49.
