Thirty years ago, Demis Hassabis was the second best 12-year-old chess player in the world. It seemed clear, to most, that his future as grandmaster was already outlined.
But young Demis had other ideas. He loved the game and also loved what he told him about himself. On the board he saw not only black and white pieces, but a physical representation of his thinking. “It made me think about the thought process: what is intelligence, how is my brain processing these ideas?”
He realized that it was intelligence itself that interested him. He left professional chess completely.
