Part of the Line 1 subway will be closed for signage work for nearly 10 days as the TTC works to speed up the installation of a new signaling system during a time when passenger numbers are plummeting due to the COVID pandemic -19.
The TTC will close the section of Line 1 between Finch and Sheppard-Yonge stations starting at 11pm on 4 December.
The closure will therefore be extended to St. Clair station during the weekend of 12-13 December.
The TTC says full service on the line will not resume until 6am on December 14th.
“We are taking this opportunity to make the most of our small number of passengers and complete the imperative repair work in the subway system, creating inconvenience to as few customers as possible,” said the CEO in a press release. by TTC Rick Leary. “This work will take our teams several years forward in the process of modernizing the system and providing the best possible service to our customers.”
The TTC has typically opted for weekend or early weekday closures to accommodate work on the new reporting system, but has decided to authorize a longer closure, so that it can take advantage of passenger levels that are still falling 50% of where they were pre-pandemic.
The TTC says the planned work on Line 1 will avoid more than two years of early night closures.
“I know these closures are frustrating, but the TTC is doing this work now during the pandemic as subway traffic is drastically reduced to save years in the long run,” Mayor John Tory said in the statement. “I want to thank our TTC workers for doing everything they can to speed up the installation of the ATC signal system. These updates will help provide a more reliable subway ride for more riders.”
The TTC says the shuttle buses will be running during closure and that customers can expect one every minute “during peak periods”.
North York Center Station will be closed from 11pm on December 4 to 6am on December 14, but all other stations will remain open for the sale of fares and connection to surface routes.
