If you see such a natural formation in the forest, do not rush to “clean up”: it is an insect house, where many small creatures have found refuge. In decaying wood there are also 800 species of beetles, such as wood rodents. A dead tree provides habitat for a complex of insect, fungus and lichen species up to 50 years after drying, until it becomes a natural component of the soil.
“It is a misconception that dead trees contribute to the proliferation of forest pests. Tree pests live mainly in diseased or withered trees. The presence of dead wood is one of the conditions for forest health, because rotting wood it hosts species that do not endanger living trees, ”explained Elīna Medne, a 4th year student at the Agricultural University of Latvia.
For example, ants and dark knights live on dead spruces and are the most dangerous enemies of the eight-toothed bark beetle. If trees damaged by the pest are cut down in winter, most of the pests that overwinter the bark in the trunk are removed, while the bark itself overwinters in the ground.
